Richard Learoyd catalogue Richard Learoyd makes large scale photographic works using a room sized Camera Obscura in his London studio. Commisioned to create the exhibition catalog for the Fraenkel Gallery, I showed some of the works in their entirety, but then on following pages, sections of the work at life size. Gallery goers who purchased the catalog were taking away a part of the show with them.
Katy Grannan 99/9 The challenge here was to reconcile two different photographic approaches: documentary color portraits and narrative black and white photographs. They seemed to be two sides of a story that would not sit well together in one volume. The axes of the graphics in each book aligned to the diecut numbers on the slipcase. The font mirrors the slightly flawed qualities of the books’ characters.
Katy Grannan: Boulevard/Believers When Fraenkel Gallery—one of the world’s most respected galleries and publishers of photographic works—wanted to create more ambitious catalogues in support of their shows, they tapped JMS for the solution. One of these projects was a commission for a catalog to accompany Katy Grannan’s show “Boulevard.” When the artist completed “The Believers,” a nine-minute film to play in conjunction with “Boulevard,” we developed a web site and helped her find the right screening venue: an abandoned storefront next to a mortuary at the fringe of the Valencia district in San Francisco, creating buzz and interest.
